Yours Truly - Toxic Rewview

The Australian band Yours Truly is back with their powerful sophomore album titled Toxic out August 16th. Vulnerable lyrics paired with heavier and grittier instrumentals take the listener through a rollercoaster of raw emotion.

After the release of the 2022 EP “Is This What I Look Like” and two members leaving the band. The remaining half found themselves with a difficult decision - to give up or to fight? Collaborating with a handful of different musicians, including long time collaborator Stevie Knight and Ocean Grove’s Sam Bassal as producer, the band set out to start a new chapter. The duo also decided to recruit Henry Beard as their new drummer.

The album starts with "back 2 u" which immediately draws you in. Lyrically diving into feelings of confusion and denial, trying to fix something that's beyond repair already.

Going into "Sour" you can feel the build up of frustration and anger being let out in a raw and cathartic manner, while "California Sober' goes back to catchy pop punk melodies and lyrics that underline the importance of being present when spending time with loved ones without substances clouding one's mind.

With “All That I’m Not” we get to the sad midpoint of the album. A heartbreaking and beautiful ballad with a powerful build up.

“Bloodshot eyes” and “Sinking” pick the pace back up with the latter creating a sonic landscape that’s dark yet cathartic. The vocal delivery really sells the feelings of hopelessness and suffocating. The song features Jono Hawkey of Bloom whose vocals make the song stand out in the best way.

Nearing the end with “Desaturated” comes in with a lighter and sassy pop punk anthem with retrospective lyrics that could still end up in a summer playlist.

The album closer “Call My Name” speaks about the internal struggles of knowing a person is bad for you, yet still doing everything to keep them around. From shifting the blame to yourself to finally making peace with the fact some things aren’t meant to be, it’s a stunning introspective track that ties the album together.

Overall, “Toxic” is the embodiment of the internal battle coming out of situations or relationships that are bad for you and the strength it takes to come out on top. It’s an incredibly vulnerable record that shows all the facets of dealing with trauma and healing from it.
